History: Elmer E. Ellsworth and John J. Williams --- First/Last Union soldiers killed in the U.S. Civil War. Ellsworth was shot by a Confederate inn-keeper while trying to remove the rebel flag (Virginia 5-24-1861). Williams was killed in combat at the Battle of Palmito Ranch (Texas 5-13-1865). [570x400]
