BASEBALL: State of the League 7/29 - National League

Previous SotLs:NL7/22AL7/24I'm all ears for ideas to improve! Feel free to drop a comment below if you've got anything you'd like to see in the future.STANDINGS AND WEEKLY MOVEMENTNL WEST7DCHANGENL CENT7DCHANGENL EAST7DCHANGE 59-473-2+1 59-484-3- 57-463-3- 57-492-5-1 56-482-3- 58-484-3- 46-593-3- 56-494-2- 52-536-1- 46-603-3- 52-531-5- 51-555-2- 43-623-3- 43-613-4- 46-603-4-The only standings swap this week was the Dodgers and Giants, thanks to a pretty terrible week by the Bay Area teamWith a strong showing this week, both the Mets and Marlins managed to close some of the gap in the Wild Card race, while the Pirates have brought themselves within half a game of the Cardinals and Giants for the second spotThe winningest division this week was the East, while the Reds brought the Central down to a net negativeUPCOMING SCHEDULESNOTE:IONLYCOVERTEAMSLEADINGADIVISIONORHAVINGORWITHIN5GAMESOFAWILDCARDSPOT Despite starting last week well with 2 wins over the Phillies, the Giants have lost 5 in a row and are scrambling to salvage the last 2 games of their homestand against the Pirates before heading out to east to play the Mets in a 4-game series this week. After a relaxing day off to soak in their series sweep of the Giants, the Dodgers welcome the Braves to town for 3 games before the Cubs come to visit, and then start a 2-and-2 series against the LA Angels of Anaheim (California,Earth,MilkyWayGalaxy). The Brewers came off a winning homestand with a quick loss to the Rays, and will work to take the series' next two games before flying over to St. Louis to face the Cardinals team that is only 1.5 games back in the division. Having started the road trip with a couple rough losses to the Rockies, the Pirates have come back with back-to-back wins and look to finish plundering the Giants in the Bay before parking their ship securely in the Dbacks' pool for 4 games. The Cardinals spent the past week managing to win only 2 of 5 games against sub-.500 teams, and will be looking to turn their fortunes around in San Diego before they return home to welcome in the Brewers for 3 games - hopefully they'll leave some beer in the visiting clubhouse for the Red Sox, who come to Busch Stadium next week. Looking to end their homestand on a positive note by maybe winning a game or scoring more than 2 runs, the Reds will look optimistically to the future as they prepare for a road trip against a resurgent Marlins team and an Indians team who have managed to be even worse than the Reds. The Nationals will try to finish their long road trip by not losing to the Marlins these next two games, then return home for a 3-game set against the struggling Phillies to warm up for the Orioles and Mets coming to town. The Braves managed to end the week on a positive note despite a losing series against the Marlins, and are rewarding themselves with a vacation to the West Coast, with games against the Dodgers, Padres and Mariners to keep them busy when they're not at the beach. The unstoppable Orange Submarine returned from a winning road trip to reward their dozens of fans with a home victory against the Nationals. The Marlins will now look to keep up their winning ways with 2 more games against the Nats before the Reds come to town for 4 games.TEAM/PLAYER NEWSNL WEST Martin Prado's 8 hits and 6 RBIs led a potent Dbacks offense with help from David Peralta's 2 triples, leading the Dbacks to 3 wins. On the mound, Chase Anderson threw 2 quality starts and Vidal Nuno threw one of his own, while Eury De La Rosa, Randall Delgado, and Addison Reed locked down 13 scoreless innings pitched. On the injury front, Cliff Pennington has started his rehab, and AJ Pollock is scheduled to take batting practice today as they work their way back. Yasiel Puig's 3 triples supported Matt Kemp and Adrian Gonzalez's 8 and 7 hits respectively to stand atop the Dodgers' offense, while Zack Greinke and Clayton Kershaw both denied the opposing teams a run (Kershaw did it for 9 innings) and Kenley Jansen converted his only save opportunity of the week. Chone Figgins and Erisbel Arruebarrena are both rehabbing in the minor leagues along with Scott Elbert, who is recovering from 2013 Tommy John surgery. Buster Posey and Hunter Pence hit the team's only home runs this week in support of Madison Bumgarner, Ryan Vogelsong, and Tim Hudson's quality starts, while the Giants' new closer Tim Lincecum earned a save this week. The good news comes from the disabled list, where Marco Scutaro, Hector Sanchez, Angel Pagan, and Brandon Belt are all potentially returning to the team in early August. Yangervis Solarte seems to have found his fit in San Diego with 5 RBI and 5 runs scored, as well as a triple and a homer, and Seth Smith and Tommy Medica both chipped in with 8 hits behind a starting rotation that gave quality starts from Jesse Hahn, Tyson Ross, Jason Lane and Ian Kennedy. Checking the DL, Everth Cabrera and Joseph Wieland are both on rehab assignments and may be up by the end of the month. DJ LeMahieu, Josh Rutledge and Ben Paulsen medaled in this week's Rockies Hits Arms Race with 11, 9 and 8 respectively, though Nolan Arenado stole the offensive show with his 3 homers and 7 RBI. On the mound, Brett Anderson, Tyler Matzek, Jorge De La Rosa and Yohan Flande all threw quality starts. And in injury news, Justin Morneau, Boone Logan, and Jordan Lyles are all rehabbing in hopes of returning to that Rocky mountain high.NL CENTRAL Mark Reynolds and Jonathon Lucroy combined for 7 home runs this week to lead the Brewers' offense, helping Matt Garza and Kyle Lohse convert their quality starts into wins, though Yovani Gallardo and Jimmy Nelson's quality starts didn't receive the same luxury. Matt Carpenter and Matt Holliday combined for the team's only 5 homers as the Cardinals struggled to win games, while only Lance Lynn and Adam Wainwright pitched quality starts for the rotation. Trevor Rosenthal captialized on both save opportunites he was given, though. Emilio Bonifacio returned to the lineup on fire with 10 hits in 28 at bats, while Anthony Rizzo cooled down just a touch by only hitting 2 homers this week. One the mound, Kyle Hendricks kept his ERA to 0.68 over 13.1 innings, earning 2 quality starts for himself while Jake Arietta and Tsuyoshi Wada each threw one of their own. Edwin Jackson is expected to make his start tonight after exiting his last start with cramps. Josh Harrison, Ike Davis, Travis Snider and Gregory Polanco have all hit 2 homers this week in support of Vance Worley who one-upped Kyle Hendricks this week with 15 IP, 0.60 ERA with two quality starts, and Francisco Liriano who threw one of his own. Devin Mesoraco led the team's offense with 1 HR and 3 RBI this week in a showcase of why the Reds are struggling, while Johnny Cueto, Mat Latos, and Home Bailey each threw quality starts (Bailey threw 2). Unfortunately, Brandon Phillips and Joey Votto are both still a month away from returning.NL EAST Chris Johnson reprised his role as head of the Braves' offense for yet another week with 7 hits, 1 homer and 6 RBI, while BJ Upton managed to end the week with more hits than strikeouts. On the mound, Ervin Santana trumped both Hendricks and Worley by throwing 15.1 IP for a total 0.59 ERA, with 2 quality starts while Aaron Harang, Julio Teheran, and Mike Minor each added one quality start. Jonny Venters will be throwing a bullpen session sometime this week, as he recovers from Tommy John surgery from May of 2013. Adeiny Hechavarria and Christian Yelich led the Marlins' offense this week with a combined 18 hits and 11 runs scored, supporting quality starts by Brad Hand and Henderson Alvarez and a bullpen that gave up 4 ER in 18.2 IP, while Steve Cishek earned 4 saves. Daniel 'Dublin' Murphy hit 5 doubles this week amongst his 11 hits, while Lucas 'Lebowski' Duda hit 4 homers of his 7 hits, leading an otherwise middling Mets offense to success while Jacob DeGrom and Bartolo Colon each threw 2 quality starts and Jennry Mejia matched Steve Cishek's 4 saves. The lone Nationals' homer this week was hit by Adam Laroche, who provided 7 of the team's RBI to lead the team's offense, while Denard Span's 10 hits and 6 runs scored provided plenty of support. Working the mound, Doug Fister, Gio Gonzalez, Tanner Roark, and Jordan Zimmermann each provided quality starts, and Rafael Soriano managed to convert 3 of 4 save chances. Marlon Byrd's 11 hits and 5 RBI were more than enough to lead the Phillies offense, flanked by Ben Revere, Carlos Ruiz, and Chase Utley who provided 9, 8 and 8 hits respectively. The rotation tried to help themselves as well, with Cole Hamels, Roberto Hernandez and AJ Burnett each throwing a quality start, and Jonathan Papelbon secured 2 of his 3 save chances.REMEMBERDO NOT DOWNVOTE BASED ON OPINION OR FLAIR.OR YASIEL PUIG WILL BECOME THE NEW FACE OF CLASSY MLB PLAYERS via /r/baseball http://www.reddit.com/r/baseball/comments/2c10pn/state_of_the_league_729_national_league/
