BASEBALL: This is the first time both the Orioles and the Royals have been in first place past May since August 30, 1979.

Did a bit of research on baseball reference, and found that the Royals managed a half game lead in the AL West on that date. That was the only day in the second half of the season in which the Royals were in first place, and ended up with an 85-77 record, 3 games back of the Angels. The Orioles would finish first in the AL East with a 102-57 record, and lose in 7 games to the Pirates in the World Series.1993 comes super close, with the Royals tied for the West lead as late as July 6th, and the Orioles opening up a 0.5 game lead on July 20th. Both teams would miss the playoffs, with the Royals going 84-78 and the Orioles going 85-77.Other close ones: 1997, in which the Royals lead the central on May 17th with a 20-19 record, and the Orioles lead the AL East literally the entire year. Royals would finish 67-94.1989, May 16th the Royals were tied in the ALW and the Orioles lead the ALE. Royals would finish 92-70 and in second place, and the Orioles would finish 87-75, after an awful second half slump that saw them lose a 7.5 game lead over the Blue Jays. Here's the standings on August 30, 1979. via /r/baseball http://www.reddit.com/r/baseball/comments/2dm7m8/this_is_the_first_time_both_the_orioles_and_the/
